Adscrito al realismo social en los cuentos de Jogos de azar (1963) y las novelas O hóspede de Job (1963) y O delfim (1968), derivó hacia el experimentalismo verbal, al servicio de una visión más irónica y distanciada, en Dinossauro excelentíssimo (1972), fábula sobre Antonio de Oliveira Salazar; Balada da Praia dos Cães (1982), y Alexandra Alpha (1987). Otras obras son el ensayo A Cartilha do Marialva (1960), De profundis. Valsa lenta (1997), y Lisboa, livro de bordo ("Premio Fernando Pessoa", 1997).
