Nombre genérico de los compuestos alifáticos con dos grupos hidroxilo en la molécula, o dialcoholes. Son líquidos incoloros y solubles en agua y en disolventes orgánicos. Se emplean como disolventes. El glicol ordinario (o glicol a secas): es un dialcohol de fórmula CH2OH-CH2OH, utilizado como disolvente y anticongelante, y en la fabricación del tergal.
